These pieces came from a tangent of one of my many spirograph base explorations. These take the spirograph paths and turn them into chunky, vibrant loops that weave into each other.

As yet another exploration of spirographs, I looked into making some “chunky” spirographs (using a vibrant color palette). The chunky-ness of the results didn’t turn each output from the algorithm into a visually beautiful result. However, when “all the stars aligned” it had some amazing results! I therefore knew I wanted to turn this into a tiny set of less than 10 pieces that I would manually pick (from hundreds of outputs). Finally, three Coiling Curves were sold as some of my first NFTs on Foundation in the summer of 2021. They once came into existence by the motion of multiple circles rotating around each other, before getting caught in an endless drowsy dance of symmetry flowing along their silky curves. These pieces were be exhibited at the International Modern and Contemporary Art Fair in Milan on LED Walls at the Piazza Gae Aulenti square during 1-3 April 2022 through Art Innovation Gallery.

Rotae

“Rotae” is a generative art collection that I created for Art Blocks. It is based on, and is an ode to, the vast array of beautiful shapes that can appear from the seemingly simple process of letting circles rotate on (many more) circles. Like all Art Blocks projects, this project has the generative algorithm that I created (±11kb) be forever inscribed into the Ethereum blockchain. When minting a piece, there is no way to know how the result will look. Only by making the transaction itself is the “hash” created that is used as input into my algorithm, thereby creating the image.

Rotae

“Rotae” is a generative art collection that I created for Art Blocks. The name of the project, Rotae, means “wheels” in Latin, and is a nod to the paper that describes the math behind finding a certain m-fold symmetry, regardless of the number of circles that are chained together.

Visualizing the “Beauty of Math” in 3 minutes

A very short blog where you can find the slides and video of the 3-minute elevator pitch I gave at the Reasons to conference in Brighton, UK on Wednesday September 7th 2016. It’s definitely not something that will suit a business/no-nonsense chart. But then again, if you only make those kinds of charts, I feel that doing data visualization is definitely less enjoyable than if you try to have some fun with your creations every now and then. So let’s start by adding a bit of glow to our shapes!

Animating (dashed) lines and paths with d3.js & spirographs

In this blog I’ll explain how to animate both solid and dashed lines. To make things slightly less boring, I’ve created a spirograph drawing app for the examples. It came about because last week I wanted to animate a dashed line in a chart. Trying to use the technique I always apply for solid animated lines I suddenly found out that animating a dashed line isn’t trivial. It’s because of the fact that an animated solid line is, secretly, a dashed line, but I’ll go into that later.

Animating a heart shaped curve with d3.js

Just something small for Valentines day. I found the formula for a heart shaped curve on the Wolfram website and wanted to animate the line that draws these points with d3.js.
